Anu Vahtra truly has a momentum in her young artistic career: as winner of the Estonian Köler Prize (2015 – seen at Chimera-Project Gallery) Vahtra had 3 solo exhibitions in 3 countries this year: For Art Brussels (non-profit-sector) she was invited by the EKKM for a solo presentation, later followed by solo exhibitions in Tallinn (Hobusepea Gallery & Draakon Gallery), Cologne (Kjubh Kunstverein) and now finally in Budapest at Chimera-Project gallery.
Anu Vahtra is renowned for her artistic approach to site-specific space-oriented problematics and for the diligent methods of articulating them. Her installations, which often include the medium of photography, capture the surrounding space into itself, making the site become both the subject and the physical form of the artwork. The upcoming exhibition in Budpest serves as a continuation of “A room made of blank pages”, the artist’s recent solo show at Kjubh Kunstverein in Cologne, Germany. Taking as its starting point Anu Vahtra’s artist’s book “Untitled” (Lugemik, 2015) which documents ten of her spatially concerned projects, the exhibition introduced a series of translations of a two-dimensional page back to a three-dimensional physical space. Focusing on the idea of a blank page, the title of the exhibition referred to the empty space intentionally included in the book. For the exhibition at Chimera-Project Gallery, Vahtra presents a proposal for an extended spatial narrative adapting elements from the previous set-up into a new structure.
